Load Flow and Short Circuit
Load flow and short circuit studies are fundamental to verifying power system steady-state performance and equipment integrity under all operating scenarios. MEPCO calculates branch loading, bus voltage regulation, reactive power balance, and maximum prospective 3-phase and unbalanced short-circuit duties to verify switchgear ratings, busbar withstand, and protective margins.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Bus Voltage Profiles & Regulation: Assessing bus voltages, voltage drops across long feeders, and reactive power compensation under peak, minimum, and emergency configurations.
- Branch & Transformer Loading: Identifying overloaded transmission lines, cables, and power transformers under normal operation and N-1 contingency outages.
- Three-Phase Symmetrical Short Circuit: Calculating initial symmetrical short-circuit current (Ik”), peak make current (ip), breaking currents (Ib), and steady-state short-circuit current per IEC 60909 and ANSI/IEEE.
- Unbalanced Fault Analysis: Evaluating Single Line-to-Ground (SLG), Line-to-Line (L-L), and Double Line-to-Ground (DLG) fault duties to determine neutral grounding stresses and zero-sequence return paths.
- Equipment Duty Checking: Comparing calculated fault currents against manufacturer ratings for circuit breakers, disconnectors, current transformers, and switchgear busbars.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Primary Tool: ETAP (Electrical Transient and Analysis Program) — Load Flow & Short-Circuit modules.
Secondary Tool: Siemens PTI PSSE — Transmission-level steady-state and contingency power flow solvers.
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Short Circuit Standards: IEC 60909-0, IEC 60909-1, ANSI/IEEE C37.010, IEEE 141, IEEE 399.
Equipment Standards: IEC 62271-100, IEC 62271-200, IEEE C37.20.
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
