Insulation Coordination (ICS)
Insulation Coordination Studies (ICS) determine the required dielectric strength of electrical equipment and the optimal placement of surge arresters to protect high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substations against catastrophic overvoltages. MEPCO conducts rigorous electromagnetic transient analysis in PSCAD/EMTDC, evaluating temporary overvoltages (TOV), switching overvoltages, lightning surges, and ferro-resonance.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Surge Arrester Selection & Placement: Determining Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage (MCOV), nominal discharge current, energy handling capability (kJ/kV), and separation distance margins to equipment.
- Temporary Overvoltages (TOV): Evaluating power-frequency overvoltages caused by ground faults, load rejection, resonance, and line energization (Ferranti effect).
- Switching Impulse Overvoltages (SIOV): Simulating statistical switching overvoltages during transmission line and transformer energization / de-energization.
- Lightning Impulse Overvoltages (LIOV): Simulating direct lightning strikes to phase conductors (shielding failure) and backflashover across tower insulator strings.
- Very Fast Transient Overvoltages (VFTO): Modeling internal disconnector switching operations within Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS) up to 380 kV.
- Ferro-Resonance Investigation: Evaluating non-linear resonance between transformer magnetizing inductance and line capacitance under single-phase opening.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Primary Tool: PSCAD / EMTDC (Electromagnetic Transient Simulation Engine with non-linear surge arrester and frequency-dependent line models).
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Core Standards: IEC 60071-1 (Principles, definitions and rules), IEC 60071-2 (Application guide), IEEE 1313.1, IEEE 1313.2.
Apparatus Standards: IEC 60099-4 / IEEE C62.11 (Metal-Oxide Surge Arresters), IEC 62271-203 (Gas-Insulated Substations).
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
