HV and EHV Transmission Lines Design
High-voltage and extra-high-voltage overhead transmission lines form the critical backbone of national energy grids. MEPCO delivers complete electrical and mechanical transmission line engineering, including route alignment optimization, conductor selection, tower spotting, sag-tension calculations, insulator string selection, and substation interface engineering.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Route Selection & Alignment Profiling: Optimizing transmission line corridors using topographic survey data, avoiding environmental hazards, urban encroachments, and geological obstacles.
- Conductor & OPGW Sizing: Sizing phase conductors (ACSR, AAAC, ACCC) for continuous thermal rating, corona loss, radio interference, and selecting Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) for lightning shielding and high-speed data.
- Tower Spotting & Profile Drawings: Positioning suspension, tension, angle, and terminal towers along the line profile to maintain minimum ground clearances under maximum conductor operating temperatures.
- Sag-Tension Mechanical Calculations: Calculating conductor sag, tension, and stringing charts across varying temperature, wind, and ice loading conditions.
- Insulator String Engineering: Selecting composite (silicone rubber) or porcelain insulator strings, calculating creepage distances for desert/marine pollution environments, and sizing corona rings.
- Substation Terminal Interfaces: Designing dead-end gantries, slack spans, down-leads, and surge arrester connections at substation termination points.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Engineering Tools: PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, specialized transmission line sag-tension software.
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Transmission Standards: IEC 60826 (Design criteria of overhead transmission lines), IEEE 738 (Calculating current-temperature relationship of bare conductors), ASCE 74.
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
