User Defined Model Development
Modern power system operators demand accurate, validated mathematical simulation models to evaluate the dynamic impact of new power plants. MEPCO develops, tunes, and validates custom User-Defined Models (UDM) in PSSE and PSCAD/EMTDC for conventional gas/steam turbines, combined-cycle plants, renewable wind turbine generators (WTG), solar PV inverter stations, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and specialized protection controllers.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Custom Generator & Turbine Modeling: Developing dynamic models for multi-shaft gas turbines, steam turbines, speed governors, and excitation systems (AVR / PSS).
- Renewable Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) Models: Formulating generic and vendor-specific models for wind turbines (Type 3 DFIG, Type 4 Full Converter) and solar PV inverters with fast active/reactive power control.
- PSSE Fortran Code Development: Writing, compiling, and debugging custom user-written dynamic models (UDM) integrated into Siemens PTI PSSE dynamic engine.
- PSCAD / EMTDC Detailed Electromagnetic Models: Building detailed converter control loops (PLL, inner current control, DC bus control) for electromagnetic transient assessment.
- Model Benchmarking & Step-Response Verification: Subjecting models to frequency, voltage, and mechanical power step disturbances to verify mathematical convergence and physical reality.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Primary Tool: Siemens PTI PSSE (Fortran compiler, user-defined dynamic libraries).
EMT Tool: PSCAD / EMTDC (custom component modeling, C/Fortran interface).
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Dynamic Guidelines: WECC Dynamic Modeling Guidelines, IEEE Task Force on Generator Model Validation.
Grid Code Specs: EETC, SEC / National Grid SA, and DEWA dynamic modeling specifications.
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
