Neutral Ground Reactor (NGR) Sizing
Neutral Grounding Reactors (NGR) are connected between power transformer or generator neutrals and earth to limit single line-to-ground fault currents to manageable levels. MEPCO calculates reactor impedance, continuous and short-time thermal ratings, and verifies that healthy-phase temporary overvoltages (TOV) and protective relay sensitivity remain fully coordinated.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Fault Current Limitation Calculation: Determining the required inductive reactance (\(X_L\)) in ohms to limit ground fault currents to specified values (e.g., 400 A, 1000 A, or 2000 A).
- Short-Time Thermal Withstand: Sizing reactor conductor cross-sections to withstand fault current for specified durations (typically 10 seconds or 30 seconds) without thermal breakdown.
- Continuous Current Rating: Calculating unbalance zero-sequence continuous current flowing through the neutral under normal load unbalance.
- Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) Verification: Verifying coefficient of grounding (COG) to ensure that voltage rise on unfaulted phases during ground faults does not overstress surge arresters or equipment insulation.
- Protective Relay Sensitivity: Ensuring that residual earth fault currents remain comfortably above minimum pickup thresholds of ground overcurrent (51N/51G) relays.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Primary Tools: PSCAD / EMTDC and ETAP.
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Standards: IEEE C57.32 (Guide for the Application of Neutral Grounding Devices in Electric Utility Systems), IEC 60076-6 (Reactors).
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
