HV and EHV Substations Design
MEPCO’s substation engineering design team delivers detailed, multidisciplinary designs for Air-Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS) up to 500 kV. We develop key single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, section elevations, control and protection schematics, earthing mats, and multidisciplinary interfaces with civil, structural, and SCADA disciplines.

Technical Scope & Engineering Capabilities
MEPCO Engineering Projects brings specialized domain knowledge, rigorous modeling standards, and practical site experience to every assignment. Our scope covers:
- Key Single-Line Diagrams (SLD): Formulating substation busbar topologies (single bus, double bus with transfer, breaker-and-a-half, ring bus) detailing all primary switching apparatus, instrument transformers, and surge arresters.
- Substation Plot Plans & Layouts: Optimizing equipment spacing, phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth electrical clearances, maintenance access roadways, and security perimeter fencing.
- Section Elevations & Structural Interface: Developing elevation sections, gantry steel structure loading criteria, equipment support structures, and foundation loading datasheets.
- Secondary Protection & Control Schematics: Complete AC/DC schematics, current and voltage transformer circuits, trip circuit supervision, breaker failure logic, and interlocking schemes.
- Cable Trench & Raceway Engineering: Designing indoor and outdoor cable trenches, duct banks, cable tray runs, and control room raised floor layouts.
- Substation Auxiliary Power Design: Sizing and designing AC station service transformers, low-voltage distribution boards, DC battery banks, and dual-redundant battery chargers.
Software Platforms & Computational Tools
Design Tools: AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit (BIM for substations), Bentley Substation.
Applicable Standards & Grid Codes
Substation Standards: IEC 61936-1 (Power installations exceeding 1 kV AC), IEEE 1427 (Guide for Substation Design), IEC 62271-203 (GIS), National Grid Codes.
Methodology & Project Delivery Workflow
Our engineering delivery aligns with MEPCO’s structured 6-stage project execution framework, ensuring quality throughout input verification, design modeling, and client handover:
- Stage 01 — Scope & Criteria Definition: Establish study boundaries, utility tie-in data, single-line diagrams, and client objectives.
- Stage 02 — Data Audit & Modeling Assumptions: Collect, verify, and validate manufacturer datasheets, impedance tolerances, and site operating configurations.
- Stage 03 — Simulation Model Development: Build detailed, validated mathematical digital models in specialized power software.
- Stage 04 — Computational Analysis & Verification: Execute base-case and contingency scenarios, conducting rigorous internal peer reviews.
- Stage 05 — Client Review & Approval: Present study findings, address technical comments, and participate in technical clarification sessions.
- Stage 06 — Final Handover: Deliver formal certified engineering reports, executive summaries, and native simulation model files.
